Myanmar Weather

SKIP AHEAD

Myanmar climate is slightly different from that of other Southeast Asian countries. Myanmar is characterized by a tropical monsoon climate and a subtropical monsoon climate. The northern part of the country has a nearly temperate climate due to its high elevation. The climate in Myanmar is warm throughout the year with little change in temperature because the surrounding mountains and highlands block the cold air of the Asian continent from moving south.

Affected by the monsoon, Myanmar can be divided into three seasons: Dry Season (March to mid-May), Rainy Season (mid-May to October), and Cool Season (November to February). The best time to visit Myanmar is during the cool season, the peak tourist season, when the Myanmar weather is clear and sunny.

January is the coldest month in Myanmar, with the lowest temperature around 63°F. From late February, as the weather in Myanmar gradually warms up, the dry season begins, with the highest temperatures in April, averaging over 83°F and even reaching up to 100°F. June marks the beginning of the rainy season in Myanmar each year. Rainfall peaks in July and August, with a monthly average of 13.5 inches of precipitation.

Myanmar Seasons - Temperature & Clothing Guide

Dry Season (March to mid-May)

As the cold season ends at the end of February, temperatures begin to gradually climb in March, reaching the peak of the year in April. During this time, Myanmar weather is very hot, especially in Bagan and Mandalay, where it can reach up to 100°F. It is recommended that you wear cool, breathable clothing such as short coats, skirts and shorts made of light cotton fabrics. If you travel to Myanmar during this season, it is a good idea to visit any of the many beaches.

Rainy Season (Mid-May to October)

From late May to October, the climate in Myanmar is humid and hot, seeing heavy rainfall especially on the coast and in the delta region. Precipitation in Myanmar peaks in July and August with an average of 13.5 inches. Roads are sometimes washed away, making travel inconvenient and difficult. And beaches are closed during this time. If you plan properly, though, you can still visit Myanmar during the rainy season. Bagan and Mandalay are recommended places to visit during the rainy season because they receive much less rainfall than other places such as Yangon. Remember to wear quick-drying clothes.

Cool Season (November to February)

The cool season in Myanmar is the most comfortable time of the year with clear, sunny weather and average temperatures between 70-80°F depending on the region. January is the coldest month with temperatures ranging between 77°F and 91°F. Despite the overall warm weather, you are advised to wear extra layers in the evenings or early mornings. The cool season is the peak tourist season in Myanmar and you need to book your flights and hotels in advance. Beach vacations, historical site exploration, hot air balloon rides in Mandalay, and boat trips on Inle Lake are all excellent experiences during the cool months.
