Cambodia Transportation: How to Get around

SKIP AHEAD

Before traveling to Cambodia, you need to be prepared for the fact that the transportation in Cambodia is not comparable to that in Europe and the Americas. But Cambodia has a variety of travel modes, offering adventure-filled and diverse experiences.

In Cambodia, the fastest way to travel is by air; a rental car is the most comfortable and convenient way to get from one place to another. Other modes of travel such as buses, motorcycles, taxis, and rickshaws are also common but are more suitable for short-distance travel. Apart from these, ferries and cycling are popular in some specific areas.

Flights - Fast & Convenient

Cambodia has 3 major airports – Phnom Penh International Airport (PHN), Siem Reap International Airport (REP), and Sihanouk International Airport (KOS), and they providea great convenience for countless travelers visiting major tourist destinations in the country.

Travelers usually fly from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap or vice versa. The flight between the two cities takes 50 minutes and costs about US$180. Three main airlines operate the flights, including Cambodia Angkor Air, Bassaka Air, and Cambodia Bayon Airlines.

Rental Cars - Convenient & Flexible

Renting a car with a driver is undoubtedly the most convenient and flexible way to explore cities like Phnom Penh. You can rent it through a hotel or a travel agency. Usually, a road trip from Phnom Penh to Kampot (155 km) costs about US$ 40. It is not recommended to rent a private car to drive yourself in Cambodia, as you will face a lot of tedious procedures, such as driver’s licenses and insurance checks.

Trains

Cambodia’s rail network was largely destroyed during the Khmer Rouge era, meaning that traveling around Cambodia by train is not a practical option at the moment. Tourists can still travel by train from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville, though, and the railway line between them reopened in 2016 with stops at Takeo Province and Kampot. Currently, the train runs on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, covering about 6.5 hours and costing about US$ 7. Tickets are only available at the station.

One of Cambodia’s specialty trains is the Bamboo Train at Battambang, running in rural Cambodia. It’s a cheap and easy way to travel. Passengers are transported on flat bamboo planks by a driver who uses a small motor to propel the train forward. Along the way, you will enjoy the beautiful countryside.

Buses - The Cheapest

Long-distance buses can take visitors to all major cities and towns in Cambodia, such as Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Battambang, Sihanoukville, and Kampot. Usually, tourists can book bus tickets through hotels or travel agencies. Fares from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville start at about US$ 6, and fares to Siem Reap start at US$ 8. Along the way, buses stop at service stations with toilets, where you can buy snacks and bottled water.

Phnom Penh Sorya is the largest local operator, and their buses are equipped with spacious seats, good air conditioners, and onboard karaoke videos (a real window into Cambodian culture). Some of the luxury buses operated by several companies such as Mekong Express offer free snacks and onboard Wi-Fi. Unlike other Southeast Asian countries, Cambodia has very few night buses, which are not recommended.

Metered Taxis & Tuk Tuks - Safer & Less Expensive

For short transfers within the city, taking a taxi is perfect, such as from the airport or train station to your hotel, or vice versa. In Phnom Penh, the basic rate for a taxi is US$ 1, with an additional US$ 0.50 for every kilometer over. Usually, it costs about US$ 4 to get from Phnom Penh Airport to the city center. Visitors can take a taxi on several apps such as PassApp Taxis, Uber, and Grab.

If you want to travel from your hotel to some of the sights in the city, a tuk-tuk is an excellent way to get around. It is a very common form of transportation in Cambodia, found everywhere on the streets, with awnings, and can take up to 4 people at a time. The price of a ride in a tuk-tuk is basically US$ 1.50-2. Tourists can call a tuk tuk on Uber, which is cheaper, but you will need to wait.

Ferries & Boats

Road trips are now easier and faster, reducing the use of boat trips. Ferries and boats became the means of transportation for specific areas. Boats run daily between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, as well as Siem Reap and Battambang, across Tonle Sap Lake. Boats from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap leave as early as 7:00 a.m. and the voyage takes about 5 hours to reach and costs about US$ 35. Long boat trips are not very comfortable as space and movement are somewhat restricted. And during the dry season, the water level is low and people have to transfer to smaller boats on the way. So, we do not recommend tourists to travel by boat.

When you want to get up close and personal with the local daily life, then a boat ride from Siem Reap to Kompong Phluk Floating Village via Tonle Sap Lake is a great option.

There are regular speedboats and ferries to Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem Islands from Sihanoukville, which take about 45 minutes.

Motorcycles & Bicycles

Riding a motorcycle is a very convenient way to get around in Cambodia. You are strongly advised to rent a motorcycle with a professional motorcyclist, which will greatly increase the safety of the trip. Both motorcyclists and passengers must wear helmets. If you do not wear a helmet, you may be stopped by the police and fined.

Motorcycles can be rented from many hotels or rental stores on the street, with types ranging from automatic scooters to heavy motorcycles, for prices from US$ 6 to US$ 15.

Cycling is a very relaxing mode of transportation, perfect for riding in the countryside, along the coast, or exploring the Angkor Wat temples. Bicycles are easy to find in most major tourist destinations. You can rent it at your hotel or on the street. Bicycles vary in quality, so it is important to check them before renting them. Rental fees are usually US$ 1-2.
