How to Apply for Myanmar Visas?


According to Myanmar’s Ministry of Health, fully vaccinated foreign visitors will no longer need to undergo PCR tests when entering the country on commercial flights or land routes from Oct 8, 2022. Most tourists and business travelers have to apply for a Myanmar visa before arriving. Visas can be obtained at the embassy or online by applying for an e-Visa (an e-Visa has been issued since May 20, 2022).

Do I Need a Visa for Myanmar?

People from the vast majority of countries will need to apply for a Myanmar visa before traveling to Myanmar. However, citizens of some specific countries are not required to hold a visa at all for short-term trips, such as tourism or business.

Which Countries Are Visa-free for Myanmar?

Citizens from the following countries can stay in Myanmar without a visa for up to 30 days:

  • Japan
  • Macao
  • Hong Kong
  • South Korea
  • Singapore

Citizens from the following countries can stay in Myanmar without a visa for up to 14 days:

  • Philippines
  • Cambodia
  • Thailand
  • Indonesia
  • Laos
  • Vietnam
  • Brunei

If you are not a citizen of a visa-free country, check if you can apply for a Myanmar e-visa or visa on arrival. Yes, Myanmar allows citizens of some countries to get a Myanmar visa through more convenient channels – online or on arrival.

Myanmar Visa Types

In terms of application methods, there are usually 3 types of Myanmar visas.

1. Regular Myanmar Visa, which you can apply for at the embassy.

2. MyanmarE-visa, which you can apply for online.

3. Myanmar Visaonarrival, which you can obtain at certain ports of entry.

For the purpose of travel, Myanmar visas are usually divided into 2 types:

1. Myanmar Tourist Visa, issued to foreigners entering Myanmar for tourism purposes.

2. Myanmar Business Visa, which isissued to foreigners for business purposes (meetings or conferences, negotiations, etc.)

Myanmar Visa Requirements

The documents required to apply for a Myanmar visa depend on the type of visa you are applying for. Here we focus on how to apply for an e-visa and visa on arrival.

(1) Myanmar E-Visa Application

You can apply for an e-visa on the official government website Click on “Apple Visa” and select the type of visa you are applying for. You will then be given the requirements for all the documents needed to apply for a Myanmar e-visa, including

√ Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months.

√ A color photograph (4.6 cm x 3.8 cm) taken within the last 3 months.

√ Proof of return flight ticket from Myanmar.

√ Proof of hotel reservation.

√ Visa, Master, and JCB credit card for online visa payment.

(2) Myanmar Visa On Arrival Application

A Myanmar visa on arrival can only be obtained upon entry through one of the following entry points: Yangon International Airport, Mandalay International Airport, and Nay Pyi Taw International Airport.

Documents required to apply for a visa on arrival include:

√ A passport must be valid for at least six months.

√ Two passport-size photos (4cm x 6cm) within the latest 3 months.

√ Proof of residence in Myanmar, including hotel reservation and full address.

√ You can only stay for a maximum of 30 days and cannot extend your stay.

4 Steps to Apply for an E-Visa

1. Fill in all the necessary information in the secure online visa form.

2. Confirm that all information is correct and pay by credit card. The confirmation email and application reference number will be sent to the applicant’s email.

3. Receive an approval letter. The approval process will take at least 3 working days. Once the application is approved, the applicant will receive an e-Visa approval letter via email. Print the approval letter and bring your passport with you. You need to present it upon arrival.

4. When you arrive at the Myanmar checkpoint, present the e-Visa approval letter and passport to the official and get the stamp on the passport.

Myanmar Visa Cost

The price of a Myanmar e-visa is different from that of a visa on arrival.

Myanmar Tourist Visa: USD 20 for an e-Visa; USD 50 for a Visa-on-arrival.

Myanmar Business Visa: USD 36 for an e-Visa; USD 50 for a Visa-on-arrival.

Can I Extend My Myanmar Visa?

Whether you can extend your Myanmar visa depends on the type of visa you hold. Myanmar tourist visas cannot be extended. Other types of visas including business and employment visas can be extended by applying at the Myanmar Immigration Office.

How Long Does It Take to Process a Myanmar Visa?

The visa processing time depends on whether you apply in person at the embassy or online, and what type of visa you are applying for. Usually, it takes about two weeks for the embassy to process a Myanmar visa application. If you are applying for an e-Visa, the processing time is approximately 3 working days.

Note that if you have any errors or missing documents, the processing time will be extended. You are advised to apply in advance, but not earlier than 3 months.
